Many of following Imperial German Air Service and Imperial Naval Air Service flight badges were part of a major collection / estate gathered together by a Pan American Airways Pilot. I was fortunate enough to be in a situation where I obtained a considerable group of these badges, some of which are shown below

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS & ASSAY MARKS ON IMPERIAL GERMAN ARMY / NAVAL AIR SERVICE BADGES

With the publication of two recent American texts on Imperial German flying badges. Great care must be taken along with a large pinch of salt when attempting to gather in and understand the information in these texts. Their claims regarding markings, depts of troughs for the pins, numbers of berries on the wreaths and types of bow forms are backed up by evidence along the lines of; ''Stuff I've seen, I know this to be true and I've seen collections'' None of this is real evidence. Indeed these texts do not reference the earlier German authors who were actually on the spot . Writers such as K.G.Kleitmann, H.Moller M. Gritzner etc.etc. probably because these earlier writers do not support many these current views. Neither do the new texts cover the vast numbers of Sub contractors involved in the mass production of all WW1 german awards. This subject is covered by the earlier German texts. and as for the vexed subject of 'hall marks' The statement that double silver hall markings of crowns and half moons did not happen is: ''simply tripe" Also the 'fact '' that the turned top of the J in Juncker is a clear sign of a Fake is interesting As the firm itself in its advertising material shows the turned J ( See Kleitmann) The lack of any forensic or serious academic detail regarding the manufacture and assaying system in Imperial Germany and its States and the immediate post war period is breath taking . One of these new American texts is the finest example of:'' STYLE OVER CONTENT'' that it has been my misfortune to expensively purchase.

The byproduct of these texts is that unmarked and hollow badges are now often reported as 'originals' which was seldom if ever the case ..Counterfeiters every where rejoice..rejoice.

As a result of this I am sorry but I am no longer interested in ADVICE on Imperial German flying badges, there are too many experts of dubious quality around giving their unintentionally fake advice

I have received more than a few responses to the note above and this one expresses many years experience from Collector 'E ' from NYC, USA. a third generation collector :

I can not add to the assay mark issue only to say that the various manufactures had much latitude when marking these items. For the most part they were hand made & not by only 1 person in a shop. When the shop/ jeweler had more then 1 employee the marking would vary. For example, the placement or the clearness of the punch mark. Even the punches may not be the same. As the business grew, new tools would be added to the shop inventory. Who knows if the shop/ jeweller got his materials from the same supplier. Competition was strong in those days in the medals/badge industry. Another example, the J used on the Juncker badges at the time. There is capital J with & without a handle at the top.

Another collector: JM from Stuttgart adds to this debate ... The capital letter J and the small letter j are seen on all Junckers material. Early badges had predominantly the capital J but the war years produced a flurry of subcontractors using both J's .....Later of course during the second World war Junckers used the small j and this I think is where the confusion arrises. Paul Meybauer for example is noted as having 6 subcontractops in Berlin alone. WW2 bombing saw the extinction by fire of all the great medal makers books, data, designs etc etc.

Also, why is it that first class and second class Iron Crosses are often marked with silver content marks 800, 925….etc yet without crowns and 1/2 moons. Silver content marks are also seen on Prussian Orders : Red Eagle , Pour le Merit. etc these usually have the 800 etc mark and again only occasionally with Crown and 1/2 moon. ( A recent Godet Blue Max had all the assay marks on its ''chess slice'' suspension area. Any ideas, why Prussian Silver marks vary so much anyone?????? Is it the much unreported sub contractors and their State registration licenses. Other States like Bavaria. & Saxony use the 800.925 etc assay marks and also the letter ''S'' . Austria , which also produced Imperial German war badges during the WW1 period used the 800 etc system and again the letter ''S''

Below is a fine example of an Iron Cross first class which shows multiple markings, not only on the rear of the cross itself but also on the two securing discs. The marks are : a double Reich silver mark with a crown and a half moon, a 925 silver content stamp and the makers initials. This is an undoubtedly authentic WW1 period Iron Cross which seems to contradict some recent texts on the subject of '' authentic markings to WWI badges and awards
…. Just goes to show that you shouldn't believe everything you read….. These photos have been loaned by an advanced American collector ….Paul.S. of Stockbridge. MA for which many thanks..

Another collector has sent these photographs of a 'high end' piece of German silver. It is probably from the 1930's and is a Napkin ring from a Table setting from the Reich Chancellery . The Marks clearly show the recognised Prussian silver markings of a half moon and crown...Just shows that Silver markings are nowhere near as clear and obvious as some authors suggest.... !!! Thank you Emil

War Service Orders, Medals & Crosses of Imperial Bavaria

GENERAL NOTE : BAVARIAN MILITARY SERVICE CROSSES

There can be some confusion regarding the various types of Bavarian Military Service crosses. Their methodology ia as follows.
There are 3 specific forms of the cross:

All crosses can be with swords and crowns depending on the gravity of the award

BM.74 E. HANSA STADT…. LUBECK WAR SERVICE CROSS. ( PROBABLY A COPY )
This Lubbock Cross is perhaps the rarest of the Hansa Stadt group war service crosses. The Lubbock Cross was issued by the City and State ( and FreiStadt ) of Lubbock . Silvered reverse with "'Fur Verdienst im Krieg 1914" with all the enamel intact and in good condition.……. I really too good quality for a copy.
There were thought to be 11.000 of the original medal awarded……..
NOTE. FOR YOUR INTEREST AND RESEARCH. In Volume 2, PAGE 651 of 'Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen' Jörg Nimmergut appears to write that silver central disks on this Lubeck medal were for "noncombatants" ( my translation ) The more common gilded central disks were combatant awards

Military awards were also awarded to military Field Marshals and Generals but these were awarded with the addition of swords. This award is directly similar the the British "Royal Victorian Order'"

As mentioned in the UK we have a similar award caller the Royal Victorian Order. ( the RVO) which I believe is the only award given at the sole discretion of The King or Queen. no advisors / committees are involved. The Hohenzollern Haus order was given personally by the Kaiser not by committees ............and he died in 1942 The Wagner makers were early makers but latter awards were produced by Godet and appeared to be awarded after were given a contract in 1926 The Kaiser continued to award them up until his death .....They were in his personal gift to bestow / give them. From 1930 till 1939 some 13 were thought to have been given..and indeed the multiple LESSER Hohenzollern pins, medals, neck awards etc were awarded by the Hohenzollern family up to 1965

The London Assay Office has analysed the metal content of this medal. It is as follows.

White metal ( including the pin and hook ) : on average
. 928 parts per 1000….. 928 SILVER

Yellow metal 584 parts of gold per 1000 parts ie…………….
. 14 karat GOLD

See above photo of the Goldsmiths Company METALS assay certificate.

BM. 84. LARGE HOHENZOLLERN HAUSORDEN 1st KLASSE MIT SCHWERTEN.( PERIOD COPY)
( jewellers window display exhibition piece )

AN EXTREMELY UNUSUAL, FINE & RARE ORIGINAL PERIOD PIECE . An oversized Hohenzollern Hausorden. First Class with swords and crown, which was probably used to display jewellers stock and showing some quality of these medals. Could also possibly have been in a Taylors shop which catered to exalted members of German society.
Manufactured in gilded metal with white, black, green and blue fine enamels.
It measures some 10 cm from the top of the cross on the crown to the lower arm of the cross & is some 6.5 cm across from arm to arm….With some excellent details throughout. Crown, swords and Reich eagle are all very well executed and gilded An eye-catching advertisment for awards medals and military assesories: well made piece of Imperial Period shop wear. The picture featuring the rear of an Iron cross gives a sense of it size & its light convex form when in comparison…

BURGLARY

Our Family lost approximately £10,000  worth of goods  in our burglary all of it uninsured. (The insurance company is another storey.) Over the month since the 'break in' I watched  11 stolen pieces  of it nearly all Iron Crosses 1st class and their cases  being sold on Ebay.UK.  for a fraction of their worth.

The police were provided with the sellers Ebay name. the lot number of each of the  stolen items  and the approximate dates of sale.

What else can a citizen do?

I have had to sit and watch  these valuable pieces being sold  over a period of  4 weeks and the police have,  as far as I can see really not achieved anything.

I E.mailed the seller ( against the advice of the police ) he replied that he didn't understand but left his real Address I gave this to the police who contacted him and he handed over all he said he had, he had no idea they were stolen. He was a liar, he gave the police empty boxes after stealing their contents which he was selling on EBay and has now completely disappeared ( what a surprise ) The police actually interviewed him and let him go as they thought he was innocent.. I find that difficult to believe He was a thief at least as he returned empty boxes with the contents gone but they were shown on EBAY two days before.. The returns were worth about £400 ( out of about £3500.00 of militatria ). The police let him go !!!!! ?????? and as I mentioned he has since completely disappeared.. I give up !!

ALSO: Trying to contact Ebay.UK  "Law enforcement"  is a nightmare I  personally have  tried 15 times ( almost every  day ) and it just goes round and round. Starts off in the Philippines, you can then sent to New York, Manilla  Sheffield ? ( a false number I was given by Ebay in Manilla ) and other places that over a month I have logged. Finally you are always returned to  the Philippines call centre to yet again start the circle / circus …..with no result. It is as if they want to protect their reputation for purity and security by ignoring anything that might tarnish their image. Meanwhile Ebay is awash with stolen stuff. Ebay say that they will only act on a Police request though there appears too be no automatic Police access to their 'Law and Enforcement' section. I believe that department is a MYTH..!!

The police  must be able to disrupt Ebay organised crime. Every  Police  group dealing with Burglaries must be able to cut through Ebay.UK's  global  prevarication  to prevent these criminals selling their ill-gotten gains thus ensuring that ANY stolen goods in the UK can actually be stopped and collected so that crime actually does NOT pay………… as it does at the moment ! Just think about it £10.000.00 for an hours work! ( My local Police were unable to access Ebay.UK indeed they had not a clue what I was talking about. )

EBAY is an open sewer of stolen goods and the police appear unable to do anything. WHY ?
